"Saw" in tights. Which sucked first, the play or the film? On one hand, Shakespeare obviously wrote it to capitalize on the success of other Revenge Plays. But in no way is Titus Andronicus as good as the Duchess of Malfi or The Revenger's Tragedy. It's mix of long, can-you-top-THIS? scenes, and brooding. On the other hand, the movie is directed by Julie Taymor, who has maintained an impressively consistent level of suckage throughout her career. True, the anachronisms work, but that is because the play itself makes little sense. Why not set it any old where/nowhere? The performers take advantage of this gap to overact, because who could possibly call them on it? 1.5 stars for Jessica Lange's Joan Crawfordlike Tamora and Anthony Hopkins's blue eyes. Yes, I'm reaching.
