Although I usually enjoy Trollope's books, elements of The Soldier's Wife bothered me. Alexa, the soldier's wife, is offered a teaching job only to have the offer withdrawn because her prospective employer tells her that she will be unable to make the necessary commitment to the job in view of her husband's work and the fact that she has a young family. That would certainly be considered a discriminatory hiring practice here in Canada; I expect the UK has similar legislation. At the end of the book, Mel, who represents the modern military spouse, agrees to marry her soldier, flashes her diamond ring and tells 11 year old Isabel "one day you'll have one of these". Gag!!!
