A letter bequeathed by a disgraced British colonel to his only son, Adam, sets in motion a deadly chain of events involving the KGB, the CIA, and the terrible secret that Adam is carrying. Reprint.

McMillan Palgrave

It seems innocent enough. A disgraced British colonel bequeaths a mysterious letter to his only son. But the moment Adam Scott opens the yellowing envelope, he sets into motion a deadly chain of events that threatens to shake the very foundations of the free world.

Within days, Adam's lover is brutally murdered and he's running for his life through the great cities of Europe, pursued not only by the KGB, but by the CIA and his own countrymen as well. Their common intent is to kill him before the truth comes out. While powerful men in smoke-filled rooms plot ever more ingenious means of destroying him, Adam finds himself betrayed and abandoned even by those he holds most dear.

When at last he comes to understand what he is in possession of, he's even more determined to protect it, for it's more than a matter of life and death-it's a matter of honor.

Loved this thriller and all of Archer's book

This story is your classic spy thriller with a chase through Cold War Europe. It has a slow start for sure, but once the chase begins, it goes full-throttle. You probably have seen the story mechanics before: non-spy hero framed for crime he didn't commit; hero doesn't know who to trust; hero is underestimated by enemies; secret that can change the world, etc. Despite this, there is a freshness to these ideas for all that is was written in 1986. Adam Scott, while too good to be true at times, is still a likeable hero that you can't help but root for. You won't find anything new here, but that is alright. This story is for entertainment, pure and simple.
