This mini-series is set in two centuries and deals with two different forms of violence - the physical and the cultural. The 1873 story is of an American invasion and the slaughter of defenseless people told in the guise of a fictionalized account of the Cypress Hills Massacre. In 1920, an American film producer takes this piece of history and transforms a story of slaughter into a "heroic" tale. In other words, he makes a western, explains filmmaker Smith, "Quite a trick.".

The implied brutality to horses was such a turnoff. I know thousands of horses died on the Klondike Trail and in the old west, but a good cowboy valued his horse and treated it as a respected tool of his livelihood.

A Canadian western from a book by Guy vanderHaegen. I had the read the book which was excellent. The movie benefited from the author and a lot of dedication to make it authentic. An excellent movie from script to acting to directing. Highly recommend.
