Baker & Taylor
The second manned mission to Mars is plagued by mysterious acts of sabotage even as it uncovers possible evidence of intelligent life. Reprint.

Six years after the first manned Martian expedition, a second has been announced -- one motivated purely by its profitable potential -- and half-Navajo, half-Anglo geologist Jamie Waterman's conflicted soul is beckoning him back to the eerie, unforgiving planet. As commander of the new exploratory team, he will have to contend with a bitter and destructive rivalry, a disturbing new emotional attraction, and deadly, incomprehensible "accidents" that appear to be sabotage, all of which could doom the mission to failure. But there is much more at stake than Waterman's personal redemption and the safety of his crew. For there are still great secrets to be uncovered on this cruel and enigmatic world -- not the least being something he glimpsed in the far distance during his first Martian excursion: an improbable structure perched high in the planet's carmine cliffs; a dwelling that only an intelligent being could have built.

& Taylor

Jamie Waterman is named commander of a second journey back to Mars, where he must overcome a destructive rivalry, emotional upheaval, and a series of deadly "accidents" to unlock the secrets of the Martian world.

I was a big fan of the first book, "Mars", when I first came across it back in the mid-90s so I didn't quite know what to expect from this sequel. It lived up to expectations, for the most part, although the "suspenseful" last chapters fell a bit flat, as well as the very contrived solution to the books main dilemma involving privatized space exploration. Still, much of the scientific content was engaging and Bova does a great job of putting the reader in situ in a very strange environment.

If your more into characters having drama this could be for you! If your more into the science then i felt it was alittle slow... I do not want to turn anyone off cause i read another book from Bova and it was great. The read just took to long to get to the point...about 250 and something pages before they found what they were looking for.... try it and see what you think, Mars Federation --- Jeff
