You can tell what really makes Simone different just by looking at her: she doesn't resemble anyone in her family. She's adopted. She's always known it, but she's never wanted to know anything about where she came from. She's happy with her family just as it is, thank you.
Then one day, Rivka calls, and Simone learns who her mother was—a 16-year-old, just like Simone. Who is Rivka? What does she want? Why is she calling now, after all these years? The answers lead Simone to deeper feelings of anguish and love than she has ever known and prompt her to question everything she has taken for granted about faith, the afterlife, and what it means to be a daughter.

Baker & Taylor
Living an interesting and fulfilling life with her adoptive family, teen-aged Simone doesn't understand why her birthmother is now making an attempt to reenter her life, yet after learning the facts about her mother's situation, answers to many of her lifelong questions are finally answered and an unexpected bond between the two is established. Reprint.

Sixteen year old Simone finds out one night that her birth mother would like to meet her. Eventually, she starts building a relationship with Rivka, and learns about her birth family that comes from a Hasidic community. The story is interesting with well-developed characters, but there are a lot of things that don’t make much sense in this book. For example, Simone’s parents seem to have been in close contact with Rivka. Her parents want Rivka and Simone to have a relationship. Yet they never gave Simone any information about Rivka when she was growing up. At the beginning of the book Simone has four close friends, but then two of them just completely disappear from the book. That seems like a weird omission, especially considering one of the themes of the book is that friends can become your family and the importance of community.
