This was a wonderfully told story and the animation was absolutely brilliant. Even better than the actual movie were the special features which go behind the scenes to explain the careful research that went into telling an authentic history of Polynesia, an area of the world rich in culture that... A fun, enjoyable trip around the south Pacific, with some catchy tunes.

Wow. We watched this and couldn't understand what all the hype is about. Very thin story (theme: you are who you are!) spun out by wannabe-hit songs that advance neither action nor plot nor character development, and weird side-trips into bizarre nonsensical, um...side trips. (What was up with those coconuts anyway?) Not sure why this got such a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Totally not worth seeing. Two hours of my life I'll never get back. The rooster was cute but still not worth sitting through the whole thing. - We were curious as to how Polynesian people might feel about this so looked it up - and discovered Moana was a very calculated marketing ploy by Disney, to "sell" their Hawaiian resorts and push a whole bunch of merchandise. All actually bad for the environment (especially increasing tourism to sensitive areas, and the plethora of plastic toys). Nice try, Disney - you hypocrites. No wonder we hated it.

Somewhat boring story with a few highlights. The coconut pirates are fun. Nothing Polynesian about it. An American type suburban teenager who embarks on a great ocean voyage alone to save the world with absolutely no sailing skills. Her tribe and its' chief come across as useless flunkies. Normal Disney propaganda promoting benevolent dictatorships. No wonder so many kids today grow up to be snowflake socialists. Puff and fluff. There are much better cartoon movies. even from Disney.

Borrowed this to close out the summer; Watched it ten times till due date on loan. the water scenes are so life like it wants you to go out and experience the waters; paddle the rigger like the primative sailors use the hand as a measure to guide the stars. I really reminds adults and plants the seed to youngesters to abide by nature otherwise ....global changes occur. The songs / show in different languages , in subtitle and most of all the "hamilton broadway" show originator added his magic to the already Disney magical pixie.

5 rigger boats for excellence

One of the best movies Disney has ever created. I have watched it three times and with each viewing I enjoy it more and more. It is a very touching and uplifting story. Plus, Dwayne Johnson, Jemaine Clement, and Alan Tudyk are hilarious.

Moana: Okay, first, I am not a princess. I'm the daughter of the chief.
Maui: Same difference.
Moana: No.
Maui: If you wear a dress, and have an animal sidekick, you're a princess.

Long ago, the goddess of creation, Te Fiti, spread life all over the earth. The key to this was her heart. The heart was very powerful, but Maui, a demigod, wanted that power. He stole the heart from her and what came was darkness and monsters. The greatest monster, Te Ka, a lava monster hit Maui. With this, he lost his hook... and the heart.
A 1,000 years later, Gramma Tala is telling the story to the children of the village of Motanui. She forsees that one of the children will go out and find Maui and return the heart of Te Fiti. A little girl, daughter of the Chief Tui and Sina, named Moana is chosen by the ocean. Ever since then, she has been drawn to the ocean and expresses her love for it in every way of her life. She does not realize that she was chosen until many years later before Gramma Tala dies.
Moana sets off to find Maui in determination to save her island. Once she finds Maui, she realizes Maui stole the heart so he could give the power of life to the mortals and his hook is missing. Maui takes Moana's boat to get his hook and tries to keep Moana out of it by putting her in a cave. Moana manages to escape the cave and tries to get on her boat, but misses her landing spot. The ocean helps her get on her boat. Maui attempts to throw her out, but the ocean keeps putting her back. Maui knew he lost the "fight" when he tried to escape the boat and the ocean put him back on too.
Moana realizes Maui was afraid of the heart because he told her it was a curse and bad things would come for it. Moana thought he was kidding and started shouting for someone to get it, but then the Kakamoras, murdering little pirates, come.
