"Taking place in the days leading up to 9/11, this wrenching novel has all the tension of a thriller, but the empathy displayed for its characters is more often found in literary fiction. It's narrated by several individuals, and therefore introduces you to their hopes, dreams, and disappointments, but the story focuses on the intersection of three people at a men's club on a single night in Florida. These are April, a stripper who has had to bring her young daughter to work with her; Bassam, a wealthy if remote foreign client; and AJ, a despairing alcoholic who has been thrown out of the club for getting too handsy with one of the dancers. Their collision is slower than the one featured in author Andre Dubus' bestselling The House of Sand and Fog, but no less memorable." Certainly not as good as House of Sand and Fog. Too long and repetitive. Many of the characters seemed like caricatures of themselves.
