Art historians, other historians, and scholars of literature traveled to Provo, Utah in March 2008 to attend a conference on pageants and processions in art and literature, inspired by the exhibition Minerva Teichert: Pageants in Paint, which had been showing there since the preceding summer. Teichert (1888-1976) was a Mormon painter who significantly influenced the American mural and pageantry movements. Among the 14 presentations published here are plays and processions in goddess cults of the Near East, the Victorian fascination with Christian and pagan ritual, the pageants of power and society in the Republic of Venice, the renewal celebration Eluelie of the Aowin people in western Ghana, Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" as pageant and procession, The Masque of the Golden Bowl and the artistic beginnings of American pageantry, and a Latter-Day Saint appropriation of an art form.
