Offered in 0 more formatsNoting that most every mathematics doctoral student is required to take a qualifying exam in complex variables, Krantz (Washington U. in St. Louis) presents this textbook as a "breezy" refresher course on the topic, while suggesting that it could also be used as an entry to the subject for first-year graduate students. He describes the key ideas that would be covered in a first-semester graduate course, maps out the important theorems, and "indicates" the proofs. By "indicate" he means that short proofs are include in full, medium proofs are outlined, and long proofs are sketched. Chapters cover the complex plane, complex line integrals, applications of the Cauchy theory, Laurent series, the argument principle, the geometric theory, harmonic functions, infinite series and products, and analytic continuation.
