Four electronic engineers at Pennsylvania State University and one from a large electronics company describe some of the more complicated tricks possible with the computational electromagnetic tool finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for addressing various electromagnetic problems and phenomena. After introducing the optimization and acceleration techniques based on the vector arithmetic logic unit (VALU), which is a vector inside the regular central processing unit, they highlight differences between commercial software packages based on FDTD, on the finite integration technique, on the method of moments, and on finite element methods.
