The front cover made me think I was picking up another vampire/creature book. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a Canadian coming of age story written by a 2-time Governor General's award winner. Set as World War II wraps up, 13 year old Rachel is excited that her older brother has returned from the war. But things do not return to the way they were, and Rachel is forced to deal with a changed brother, a changing family and changes in herself. The writing was simple but affecting. I can recommend it to adults and young people alike.

This book was okay. However, it could have been 200% better if it had been narrated by Jamie instead of Rachel. Just by reading his Letters Not Sent, I could tell that his character was deeper and more relateable than Rachel's vacuous whining. I like the idea of telling what happens after a soldier returns from war, but the story barely focused on that aspect, instead taking detours into Rachel's little problems such as her relationship with her teacher, her irrelevant interest in acting, etc. etc.
