But when a chance conversation at a dinner party draws her into the case of a doctor whose life and career have been ruined, she cannot ignore what may be a miscarriage of justice. Because for Isabel ethics are not theoretical at all, but an everyday matter of life and death.
As she attempts to unravel the truth behind Dr. Thompson's disgrace, Isabel's patient intelligence is also required to deal with challenges in her own life, not least the need to spend more time with her baby son, Charlie. Her niece Cat is on holiday, leaving Isabel to look after not only the delicatessen but also Cat's vulnerable assistant Eddie. Meanwhile the insufferable Professor Dove has made an unwelcome reappearance. Most alarmingly of all, when Isabel's boyfriend Jamie develops a friendship with the mysterious and unlikeable composer Nick Smart from which she's excluded, she fears for the future of her new family.
Gentle, enquiring Isabel treads a difficult path between trust and gullibility, altruism and interference, while keeping in her sights the small but certain comforts of family, philosophy and a fine Saturday morning.
* More delightful philosophical musings from Isabel Dalhousie, Edinburgh philosopher and amateur sleuth
