In a place once known as North America, in the ruins of the lands lies the nation of Panem. A glorified Capitol surrounded by twelve districts. The Capitol is cruel and holds power over the districts by forcing each district to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen each year to participate in the lethal Hunger Games. The game is a literal fight to death that is televised on tv live over Panem. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen never thought she would live to see the day she would be put in the Hunger Games, but that changes when her younger sister Primrose was picked. Katniss bravely steps forwards and volunteers in Primrose's place. Katniss has always been close to dead before and she's always managed to survive the worst. This is all a second nature to her. Katniss needs to win so she can be there for her family and friends, so she is forced to make choices that pit survival against love. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favour.

Suzanne Collins has written a masterful novel, The Hunger Games. In the confines of District 12, a part of Panem, Katniss Everdeen enters the draft for the 74th Hunger Games. In The Hunger Games, each district, from 1-12, is required to volunteer two participants, a boy and a girl, to the Capitol. They are then put into an arena and forced to fight to the death. The last one standing wins. Katniss is forced to enter the games to save her sister. Will she be able to win? The Hunger Games is a great book, full of interesting characters, action, tragedy, and triumph. Make sure to read it!

This book is a coming of age/adventure sci fi novel. It is the first of a 3 part series by the same author. The story takes place in one of the 12 districts ruled by the Capitol, the central city. The main character, a 16-year-old girl named Katniss, lives with her family and friends in this district. The story revolves around how Katniss volunteers to participate in a fight to the death in order to protect her sister. I think the author does a good job of introducing Katniss and her family and friends so the reader understands her journey through the Hunger Games. The plot is well developed by taking the reader through her hardships and how she progresses as a character. The book portrays the struggles she endures in the Games and the lengths to which she goes to ensure her family’s safety. The book connects a dystopian world with a relatable main character in such a way that makes it suspenseful and interesting to read.

Every year, Panem hosts the Hunger Games and it involves one female and one male representative from each of the twelve districts. This year Katniss’ sister, Prim, had been chosen, but instead Katniss volunteered to take her place. Peet, the male representative, was chosen along with Katniss. Together they will fight for District 12. Even though this novel may strike as just a fun tween read, it touches upon various topics such as power, politics, and sacrifice. Katniss is hands down my favourite character since she is very brave and unique. This book is perfect for tweens and teens. @grumpykat of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel by American writer, Suzanne Collins. It was written in 2008. You can find it in the HPL or on the website under audio or eBooks. I would rate it 4/5. The Hunger Games is the first book of the trilogy based of off the fictional life of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in the future, post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. Collins did a marvelous job at leaving readers in constant anticipation to see what happens next. You feel like you are submerged into this alternate universe that is so different but at the same time, so similar to our universe. It is easy to get caught up in Katniss’s fight for survival and her complicated love interests. I would recommend this novel to young readers that enjoy fictional, coming of age novels. The Hunger Games is an exciting fast paced novel that you could very easily read in a couple of days and features relatable, down to earth characters that make this book worth its endless critical acclaim @LuLuD of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I very much enjoyed reading The Hunger Games! If you enjoyed the movie, you will LOVE the novel! Katniss is a strong and powerful female lead, who I found to be relatable and easy to connect to. I loved reading about her love for her sister, her compassion to others, along with her strength – both physical and mental. I think that the author did a great job of developing setting, as readers are able to hate the Capitol, and cheer on the districts. There are so many likeable characters in this book, which just adds to the overall enjoyment. I would definitely recommend this novel to a friend, because of its unique story. I think that it would be great for all ages! @PenelopeScriptor of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

A beautifully written novel that I have read over and over again. Set in a dystopian world where the country is divided into 12 districts and the Capitol, the book explores themes of power, social class, identity, and appearance. The narrator, Katniss Everdeen, is a strong, real woman who has her flaws but is definitely someone to root for. The book is emotional at the right moments and though the beginning is a little drawn out it adds to the suspense and heavy symbolism throughout the story. A must read and a classic.

In the nation of Panem, there are 12 poverty-stricken districts and 1 elite Capitol. For the people of the Capitol’s entertainment the Hunger Games take place on live TV annually. A boy and a girl from each district are sent to fight to the death until there is one champion standing.

Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who is the breadwinner of the family and lives in District 12. When her younger sister is selected as tribute for the Hunger Games, Katniss voluntarily takes her place.

This book is captivating and unique and it will keep you on the edge of your seat as you anticipate what will happen next.

Katniss Everdeen is a teenage hunter who lives with her mother and her sister Prim in district 12 of Panem. Every year the Panem hosts an event called the Hunger Games where two tributes, a boy and a girl from each district, are brought to an arena to fight to the death. Some volunteer for fame, but when no one in district 12 does, Prim is chosen randomly and Katniss volunteers in her place. This dystopian story is filled with heartbreaking and suspenseful moments. The symbolism of the Mockingjay pin creates a beautiful message of love and protection. Some scenes are violent but the writing style is simple.

Set in a dystopian world in the ruins of North America, this first novel in The Hunger Games series explores the elements of Panem in which the capitol rules. Under the capitol are 12 individual districts, each providing a different set of supplies and resources to the capitol. Due to the failure of a rebellion to the Capitol in the past, the capitol instituted the Hunger Games to remind the rest of Panem who is in charge. Each year, each of the 12 districts sends one girl and one boy to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death set in an arena with a variety of traps and supplies. Katniss Everdeen, a girl in District 12, volunteered to take her sister’s place in the Hunger Games after her sister’s name was drawn in the reaping. Paired with Peeta, the boy tribute, Katniss goes through a series of procedures and takes part in an unexpected strategy with Peeta in order to help them win. Filled with action-packed scenes, gore, and drama, this novel examines the life of a girl in a dystopian world where freedom doesn’t exist. Collins powerfully communicates the message that sacrifice, love, and courage are the roots of rebellion.
